Do other people's resume opinions matter? Have you ever considered getting an expert to look over your resume before sending it out for the next big opportunity? Many job seekers never think of getting expert opinions on their resumes. In fact, many believe that resumes are so simple to put together that it would just be a waste of time to go through this process. That is entirely untrue! Expert opinions on your resume can be extremely valuable.

Why Get Expert Resume Opinions?

Not everyone needs to get expert reviews of their resume. Many people are able to put together a resume that reflects their job history and personality without having anyone other input. They simply follow resume templates or guides and put together something in their own words and with their own ideas. They then move on to land jobs in their chosen fields.

This doesn’t work out for everyone, and in some cases it is justified to start seeking out expert reviews of your resume. Just make sure that you find someone who is experienced in your field, particularly with experience hiring in the field. If they have been on the other side of the desk hiring for a job similar to what you would like to land, then they will likely have an opinion of what should be done in your resume.

Never substitute their opinion for your own! Trust your gut if you think changing or adding something is not right or your resume. The goal is to get the opinion so you are aware of what may be holding your resume back at this time.

When to Get Expert Resume Opinions

You should consider getting expert opinions for your resume once you have done everything you know how to do with it. Once you believe it is in excellent condition and is ready for the eyes of a hiring manager, it may be time to see what a professional in your field thinks of it. Alternatively, if you are not sure how to fix it and something just doesn’t seem to be right, then you may be ready for professional opinions as well.

If you have been using a resume for awhile and continue to be bypassed for interviews, then it is a good idea to get professional reviews. There is probably something holding your resume back from making the best possible impression on those in charge of hiring. It is best to figure that out now rather than to continue being passed up.

Remember, their advice does not substitute for your own ideas and gut feeling. This is your resume, not theirs! If you get different opinions from different professionals, you will have to decide what you agree with most keeping your personal objectives in mind.

How to Get Expert Resume Opinions

It can be difficult to find true experts suitable for critiquing your resume. You could use human resource managers or a teacher from college familiar with your field. You could also use connections through LinkedIn to find true professionals in your field willing to give it a look.

Just be careful when showing your resume to friends and relatives who may not have the expertise to steer you in the right direction. They are all well meaning, but that does not make them the experts in your field! You need someone very familiar with the field you are trying to get into, or they are not useful to you right now.
