5 Job Searching Expectation Myths and Misconceptions

What do you expect as you start job searching? Most people do form job hunting expectations on some level because it is very scary to go into something without any expectations. You do need to know what may come as you put yourself out there for employment, but you have to turn the misconceptions around.

Job Search Expectations

Following are five job searching expectations that many people embrace in the beginning but quickly overturn or discard.

job searching expectations 1. As long as my complete working history is listed on my resume, nothing else matters.

This is a huge misconception that will set you up for disappointment. Rather than expecting your resume will impress others just because you took the time to create one, take a long look at your resume and decide what it will say about you to those considering you for a job. Will they think you are careless and lack attention to detail because your resume is riddled with typos? Or will they see you as a well-organized, detailed person because you have a professional resume that makes a good impression?

You don’t need your entire working history on the resume! Keep it to one page and display your most recent working positions. You can always put a note that more is available upon request.

2. If you can just find the right type of job listings, you can quickly get the perfect position.

Finding a job listing for a position that you are qualified to fill and interested in filling is only the beginning of the battle. There is no guarantee that the person in charge of hiring for the position will agree that you are the perfect fit to the job.

There will undoubtedly be others who have some advantage or will at least match your qualifications. Someone may be less qualified, but they may have connections inside the company that you cannot match. This means the job searching process could take much longer than you expected in the beginning.

3. Sending out a couple resumes every week or two is adequate to find a new job.

This is the laid back approach that many people take when they expect the job hunting process will go rather quickly. In today’s job market, you cannot afford to be so laid back. You cannot wait for one resume to be ignored or rejected before moving on to send out other resumes.

The best policy is to get up every morning with the mindset that searching for a job is your job. That means you scour listings for new jobs that may fit your needs and send out resumes on a daily basis. Since you can send many through the Internet now, this doesn’t have to be as time consuming or expensive as it was in years past.

4. You have to meet all suggested qualifications in order to apply for a position.

Many people have gotten jobs that they were not perfectly qualified for in the beginning! If you are interested in a job and have all of the basic qualifications laid out in the job listing, then it doesn’t hurt to send in your resume and a great cover letter. You may be surprised that the job you end up taking is quite different from the job you expected to be hired for in the beginning.

5. The job market is so discouraging today that it will take years to find even a minimum wage position.

This is entirely a myth, but it is the expectation of so many people just entering or re-entering the job market. You may not be able to find a high paying job in your field right away, but you will find employment rather quickly if your mind is open to all possible opportunities. There are even great opportunities for those who can go into business for themselves.

You have to question all of your expectations when searching for a job today. In most cases, it won’t be nearly as easy as you could expect, but it also won’t be nearly as difficult as you assume in your darkest moments of doubt.
