Expert Career Advice

Find Your Dream Career Today

If you could have any career you want, what would that be? Can you see yourself in your dream career? Where are you, what are you doing?

Everyone wants to be successful, happy, and appreciated in life. This holds true for personal relationships as well as the business world. What makes you happy and gives you a sense of success and fulfillment is different from what would make someone else feel the same way. This is why you may be trying to find your dream job or career just like millions of other people around the world.

How Well Do You Know Yourself?

This is a tough question that may seem to be simple at first glance. Many people believe they know themselves like a book. After all, who would know you better than you? The truth is, you may not know yourself as well as you think! Many people struggle to find their dream career because they simply are out of touch with what they really want out of life.

Until you know what you want out of life with a high degree of certainty, it will be difficult to find your dream career and ride off into the sunset happily ever after. Take some time to seriously think about who you are today and who you would like to be in the future.

Don’t settle for shallow answers such as “I want to be rich.” Dig deep...who are you and what do you want out of life?

Digging Deeper into Your Dream Job Situation

To help you dig in and get closer to the truth of what you want out of life, ask yourself the following questions. If you take these questions seriously you will be much closer to finding your dream career and finding happiness at least in this area of life:

  • What gets you excited or makes you angry? Things that you are passionate about tend to turn into good career fields because they keep your interest in the long term.
  • What is the most important thing to you when it comes to a job? This may include having full benefits, helping others, or working close to home.
  • Name three companies that you would love to work with. Why would you want to work with them? What type of job would you like to fill?
  • What marketable skills do you have today? What skills will you have after completing school (if you are already going to school)?

Finding Answers

You have just gone through the beginning process of trying to find your dream career. It takes a bit of work, but introspection is a great tool to tapping into the career field that will ultimately bring you the most happiness and success. Take what you have learned about yourself and what makes you excited and try to come up with a short list of three to five potential career fields. These fields should fit on all levels:

  • Some element of them should excite you enough that you would to invest years studying and growing your career.
  • The job outlook in each field should look promising for your needs. For instance, if you need insurance for your family you should be able to get that at some point in each career field.
  • There should be enough room for growth that you will be able to expand your career and feel accomplished over time.
  • You should be working for a cause you believe in or something that you feel passionate about.

Once you start identifying these potential dream career fields, try not to criticize your choices in your own mind. Those negative thoughts may sound like this:

“I could never make it in that field. I’m not smart enough.”

“I would have to go through too much school. I cannot afford it.”

Keep the dreams alive and write those careers down as options. You never know when doors of opportunity may allow one dream to come true.
