How do you determine the best career choices for you? Do you go with something that you find entertaining or do you chase a field that will deliver the best possible salary?

Some people will go for the money over enjoyment any day while others need to feel excited by their work in order to continue with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. You have to decide what it will take to make you feel satisfied today and ten years in the future. This takes a bit of thought on all of the following points.

Do What You Love

This is one of the simplest pieces of advice you could ever be given about selecting a career, but it is one of the most valuable pieces of advice as well. Once you get started in a career, you will have to work hard to establish yourself in the field and to continually prove your value to your employer. If you decide to start your own business, then you will have to work even harder to make sure that business is a success.

If you are not doing something that you find interesting, you will easily get burned out. It doesn’t matter how much money you are making or how prestigious your position may be today or in the future. If you are not interested and excited by what you are doing, then you will not feel completely happy in the job. There are more than enough people working dull jobs that they hate. Don’t become another one of them!

What Skills Do You Have to Offer?

What can you do for an employer? What are your most marketable skills? Many people start applying for jobs at random. They don’t really know what their most marketable skills are, so they do not say the right things on their resume or applications. Avoid this mistake at all costs, because it will stand in your way of securing a job that will make you feel accomplished.

Do not limit yourself to skills gained through work experience or formal education. Use skills learned through hobbies, internships, and volunteer opportunities as well. You can even use some knowledge and skills from your personal life, especially if you like the idea of going into business for yourself.

Dreaming the Future, Reaching Your Goals

Ideally, you will select a career that allows you to excel and move up in the future. You will not be locked into the position that you first enter the field with, and that means upward mobility is crucial. One way to determine whether a career field offers this mobility is to think of what goals you could set for your future. If you have trouble setting goals that could be realistically reached, then that career direction may not offer much upward mobility in the future.

Get a little creative here when think of the potential of any career direction. For instance, you may not be have much room to move up within a corporation, but you could set a goal to eventually become a private consultant or go into business for yourself. You don’t necessarily have to make more money, since there are many other types of goals that can be set for your career.

Limitations for Success

Finally, you have to acknowledge your week points and limitations when making career choices. If there were to be five things that could stand in your way of success for a given career field, what would those things be and how could you overcome them? If you can identify potential problems right from the start, you may be able to find ways to avoid them and make your chosen career path a success.

Once you give all of these things some thought you should have a better idea of what career fields might be right for you. Do a bit of research to learn about more career paths that suit your personality, goals and skills. There may be other options that you have not yet thought about.
